Pixar Internship

Overview:

I worked as a Technical Director Intern on Coco’s Global Technology team. Over the course of my internship, I completed projects to improve workflow in Pixar’s proprietary production pipeline, and helped with a handful of miscellaneous tasks GT tackled on the movie. I was very thankful for the opportunity to touch several aspects of the studio’s pipeline, and do interesting and engaging work.

Pixar’s creative property is integral to it’s operations, so there are limitations on the work I am permitted to show and/or discuss, but I have endeavored to describe my experience as best as possible.

Ground Data Visualizer:

This project was a tool I implemented to assist the Crowds and Animation department to visualize multiple layers of ground data. Ground data is sampled by the visualizer, and the data is rendered as a point cloud (represented here by the white points). This is useful for animating characters and setting crowds. It eliminates the need to have entire set pieces visible when working in 3D environments, as it gives an approximation of the set environment.

Other Responsibilities:

Profiling shot renders to test efficacy of optimizations.

Built an extension to retrieve animation data on crowd’s characters.

Updated an existing shot profiling system.
